Event Photography: Leave the Phone in Your Pocket
We’ve all become quite skilful with our phones, and smartphones have certainly come a long way. The cameras are sharper, the features smarter, and for everyday moments they do an impressive job. But when it comes to an event that really matters, something you’ve planned, looked forward to and want to remember clearly, phone pics can still fall short in ways that only become obvious after the day is over.
There’s something about events that makes time move differently. Things happen quickly. People are coming and going, talking, laughing, connecting. The best moments often come out of nowhere: a glance, a quick reaction. These are the moments you want to hold onto, but they’re easy to miss if no one’s watching for them.
That’s where event photography comes in. While everyone else is busy enjoying the moment, the photographer can stand back and observe. Not in an obvious or intrusive way, but simply by being present and ready. A skilled photographer knows how to read a room, where to be, and when to press the shutter. It’s not about taking hundreds of photos, but about catching the right ones.
Lighting is another thing people don’t always think about. A space might look great to the eye, but be a challenge for a phone camera. Low light, changing colours, spotlights – phones can only do so much, and that often shows in the photos. With the right gear and a bit of experience and post-production, those same conditions can actually work in your favour and help create beautiful images that feel true to the atmosphere of the event.
And then there’s the simple fact that when someone’s trying to get photos on their phone, they’re not really in the event. Guests can often be seen juggling drinks and phones, or miss out on important conversations and connections. It’s lovely when people want to capture memories, but it’s even better when they can just relax and know it’s being taken care of.
Phone pics are great for the small, everyday stuff. But for the big days, the ones you’ll want to remember for years, it’s worth having someone there who’s thinking about nothing else but catching those moments for you.
